The Department of Agriculture is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Director for the Science, Innovation & Extension branch.

Conditions of Employment:

- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba class 5 driver’s license, have access to a vehicle and/or ability to travel throughout the province and in Canada.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Bachelor of Science (master’s level preferred) in one of the following: Agriculture, Environmental Science, or related science discipline. A combination of related education and Western Canadian agriculture experience may be considered.
- Experience translating strategic priorities into clear operational and business plans, and experience with strategic performance management and measurement systems (e.g. Key Performance Indicators).
- Experience in the agriculture industry relating to agriculture production, agroecology, agri-innovation, agrometeorology, soil science, or modern agriculture extension.
- Experience leading the development and implementation of research and innovation programs and policies, initiatives, and legislation that are linked to Department objectives and strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage opportunities for innovation, find creative solutions to issues, and successfully manage change.
- Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster collaborative working relationships with a wide range of senior staff across government and with external stakeholders.
- Management experience with responsibility for human and financial resources.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience managing internal and external stakeholder relationships.
- Strong political acumen demonstrated through experience providing strategic advice to senior leaders on complex topics and sensitive issues.
Desired:
- Experience building relationships with Indigenous people and knowledge of the principles of reconciliation.
Duties:
As a member of the department’s management team, the Director is responsible to lead and manage the Science, Innovation and Extension Branch and to provide advice and support to the Minister, Deputy Minister and Assistant Deputy Minister.
The Science, Innovation, and Extension Branch’s mandate is to:
- Foster research and innovation to address key challenges and opportunities of the agriculture and agri-food industry that promote sustainable agri-ecosystems in Manitoba.
- Enhance diversification and climate resiliency to anticipate, mitigate and respond to agriculture production risk through applied research and innovation.
- Enhance the science, capacity, and baseline weather and soil data to respond to support sustainable production, enhance emergency preparedness responses and land use planning, increase climate resilience, and respond to extreme weather patterns.
