The Agriculture Production and Resilience Division is responsible for program development and extension for all aspects of farm management and agricultural production systems, including crops, livestock and soils.   

The Land Use and Ecosystems Resilience Branch is responsible for developing and delivering programming and extension on sustainable agricultural production, and for enhancing the resilience of Manitoba’s agricultural sector through the management and administration of Agricultural Crown Lands, soil survey and ag weather network initiatives.

We are currently recruiting the two roles noted below, which will be of interest to self-motivated individuals with a passion for public service.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be registered with, or eligible for registration with the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists at the Professional Agrologist level
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and with limited communication service
  • Valid Manitoba Class 5 drivers license or equivalent
  • Ability to travel throughout Manitoba
  • Ability to use vehicles and all-terrain vehicles, including quads in rough terrain and isolated areas – Farm Production Extension Specialist (Agricultural Crown Lands) position only


  • Bachelor of Science in agriculture with an emphasis in environmental studies, plant science, soil science or animal science.  An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered 
  • Experience in agronomy, crop production, forage production, rangeland production or livestock production and environmentally sustainable cropping and livestock practices
  • Knowledge of soils, climate, crops or livestock specific to Manitoba
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to deliver effective presentations
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to write clear, concise documents, reports, guides, and factsheets to convey complex technical information to a variety of internal and external audiences 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively and maintain strong working relationships with rural clients, industry groups and internal contacts 
  • Strong problem solving skills with the ability to analyze situations, develop options and make sound recommendations, including livestock, forage or cropland management (Farm Production Extension Specialist (Agricultural Crown Lands) position only), or for the adoption of beneficial management practices (Farm Production Extension Specialist (Agri-Resources) position only)
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple deadlines with limited lead times
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, ARCview or similar GIS program
  • Sound knowledge of issues, regulations and beneficial management practices related to crop and livestock production in Manitoba – Farm Production Extension Specialist (Agri-Resources) position only
  • Sound knowledge of issues and regulations related to livestock production and the Agricultural Crown Lands program in Manitoba – Farm Production Extension Specialist (Agricultural Crown Lands) position only


  • Sound knowledge of the Environmental Farm Plan Program
  • Project management experience 
  • Good understanding of Indigenous reconciliation and the duty to consult


The Farm Production Extension Specialist – Agricultural Crown Lands develops and delivers programming within agricultural Crown lands and assists the primary agricultural producer with decisions regarding current, environmental and sustainable production practices related to land management.  This position works with clients and specific stakeholders to deliver the Agricultural Crown Land Leasing Program.  The position is involved in field inspection and lease compliance and requires the ability to work safely and efficiently with a high degree of independence in coordination with a team.  The incumbent focuses efforts to facilitate the adoption of beneficial management practices to support and protect provincial agri-environmental resources, developing and delivering information that facilitates the advancement of the livestock/crop sector in a profitable and sustainable manner.  This position will be based in either Arborg, Dauphin or Swan River.

The Farm Production Specialist (Agri-Resources) develops and delivers programming within the agri-resources discipline to assist agricultural producers with decisions regarding environmental and sustainable production practices related to land management, crops and livestock.  This position provides provincial leadership and coordination in all aspects of agri-resource practices and programming, and works with specific stakeholders and department staff to develop strategic plans and priorities.  The incumbent focuses efforts to facilitate the on-farm adoption of beneficial management practices to support and protect provincial agri-environmental resources, and focuses efforts on developing and delivering information that facilitates the advancement of the livestock/crop sector in a sustainable manner.  This position can be based at various locations in Manitoba.
