Research Program Manager – Special Crops

Manitoba Crop Alliance is seeking a full-time, permanent Research Manager – Special Crops to join our dynamic team to execute MCA’s corn, flax and sunflower research program.

The individual who joins the MCA team needs to have a passion for agriculture and work with our growing research program to develop a strategy for research investment that is consistent with our strategic goals for the organization. We want a self-starter, highly motivated person with a positive and team-oriented attitude.

The Research Program Manager – Special Crops is responsible for executing Manitoba Crop Alliance’s corn, flax, and sunflower research program, and providing support to MCA’s Whole Farm research program, ensuring integration of research investments with MCA’s mission and objectives, under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with MCA’s Corn, Sunflower and Flax Crop Committees to develop a strategy for research investment that is consistent with strategic planning goals and objectives of the association.
  • Advise Corn, Sunflower, and Flax Crop Committees of the research investment landscape. Matching funding opportunities and research capacity including research or contract timelines and timelines for decision in advance of potential co-funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with MCA’s Research Program Manager – Cereal Crops to deliver MCA’s Whole Farm Research Program and develop a strategy for research investment that is consistent with strategic planning goals and objectives determined by the Whole Farm Research committee.
  • Liaise and participate in regional funding processes and national research cluster proposals for corn, sunflower, flax, and integrated crop agronomy.
  • Seek co-funding opportunities to multiply the effectiveness of each grower dollar invested.
  • Maintain and update MCA’s research portfolio tracking software.
  • Prepare and maintain agreements relating to all MCA research projects.
  • Coordinate and administer contract(s) between MCA and funding agencies, researchers and research facilities.

Qualifications, Experience, and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Completed post-secondary education in agriculture or related discipline; MSc. a strong asset.
  • This position requires registration with the Agrologists Institute in Manitoba;
  • Strong understanding and familiarity with Canadian agriculture and agronomic practices;
  • Experience working for a not for profit and Board of Directors considered an asset
  • Experience with project management and overseeing numerous files;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and oral;
  • Excellent organizational skills; with the ability to multi-task and prioritize;

Working Conditions of the Position:

  • Due to the nature of this position, this role requires flexibility. The successful candidate:
    • may need to occasionally work evenings to attend events.
    • must be able to travel within Manitoba and Canada, as per public health orders.
    • must possess a valid Manitoba Driver’s license and ability to drive with own vehicle.
  • The ability to work from the Carman office or remotely may be an option for the right candidate.
  • Salary will be competitive, based on education and experience.
